College: To go or not to go...
What career is right for them?
While creating the Get totally Real! life plannng project,  I've learned volumes and volumes of things about education and careers. Guiding my own children through the process has been VERY enlightening. Much has changed in time since we their age.
Since, almost all my students tell me they WANT on going to college but few can explain why except that either their parents say they have to or so they can "get a better job,"
that is the place I knew we needed to start.
Here are just a few pieces of information that should cause all ALL great concern for our children's future, and therefore the future of our country.
  • About 55% drop out their freshman year in college, due to many things. The most common reasons sited are; inability to handle the rigor, weak learning skills, lack of organization and inability to adjust to the responsibilities and freedoms. Lack of money is seldom at the top of the list.
  • While more are going to college, only about 30% of those starting college, are graduating with degrees. That number is being passed quickly by many other countries.
  • Nearly 90% of 21st century careers will require post-secondary education of some kind.
  • Over 55% of incoming college freshmen needing remedial courses in math and english because their skills are not where they need to be.
  • 65% of employers say that people they are hiring out of high school have serious deficiencies in basic skills.
How do we help them decide what's right for them?
